Learn to Play the Native American Style Flute

The Native American style flute is a musical instrument that anyone can learn to play! I invite you to release the past and discover yourself as an intuitive musician, a spiritual song teller, a deep and conscious breathing life source.

The ease of playing this seemingly simple instrument is one of the best kept secrets in the musical world. Sharing the gift of the Native American style flute, especially to those who have not "found their instrument" due to a daunting learning curve of most instruments, is a great joy!  Many of us have wanted to be musical but did not want to devote the years of practice it takes to be comfortable playing. The Native American style flute is a distinctly different experience.

The Native American style flute is a forgiving and soothing instrument. In a short amount of time, with gentle direction and encouragement, you will be playing music with joy and confidence. Due to its portability, you can take your flute(s) anywhere and share its enchanting tones.

Certified Music Practitioner (CMP)

I am specially trained to play one-to-one, bedside, for the ill and dying. I offer in-the-moment, prescriptive music, creating a relaxing and soothing sound environment for hospital patients, residents of health care facilities, and private hospice clients. The music is provided as a service for the patient and is not intended as a performance.

CMPs are trained through The Music for Healing and Transition Program (www.mhtp.org), which is accredited by the National Standards Board of Therapeutic Musicians.

Therapeutic music is quite different from music therapy. Music therapy is a practice conducted by a board certified musician who uses care plans and documented outcome goals with the intent to rehabilitate their patients.  In contrast, therapeutic music is an art based on the science of sound. Therapeutic musicians play live acoustic music specifically tailored to the patient’s condition and immediate need. Therapeutic music is a non-pharmaceutical intervention which promotes a healing environment promoting in the moment comfort care.
Scientific research (see abstracts on www.mhtp.org) shows that live therapeutic music can be helpful in:

  • Reducing awareness of pain
  • Providing comfort to grieving family members
  • Reducing blood pressure
  • Reducing pharmacological drug dosages required for pain & anesthesia
  • Relaxing voluntary and involuntary muscles
  • Memory recall for dementia patients
  • Equalizing and slowing down brain waves
  • Stabilizing the heartbeat, pulse, and respiration
  • Affecting body temperature
  • Increasing endorphin levels
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Reducing stress
  • Transitioning the dying

Why do I offer this service?

Music has been a source of healing and comfort in my own life. I grew up playing piano which was as an excellent foundation for the various musical services I now provide. In the 1990's, I heard a song played on the Native American style flute. It's gorgeous tones immediately drew me in and I decided to learn how to play it. It was so easy to learn, I decided I would play it and teach others to as well.

Years later, I signed up for the MHTP program which provided a perfect vehicle for the kind of therapeutic music I have always valued. Therapeutic music played on the Native American style flute works well in a great range of settings as well as stages of life, starting at birth and concluding at the time of transition. It is a privilege to do this work. I feel blessed to witness the power and efficacy of well chosen music to transform difficult situations into one which promotes comfort and healing.
